Creating impact: Sustainability opportunities in the hospitality sector
While sustainability in the hospitality and leisure sector brings its fair share of challenges, it also presents some exciting opportunities. Businesses in this space have a unique chance to make a meaningful impact on the environment, attract environmentally-conscious consumers, and even save money in the long run.
One of the key opportunities lies in energy efficiency. Hotels, resorts, and leisure centres are heavy consumers of energy, but adopting energy-efficient systems can make a huge difference. From installing LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances to upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, there’s a lot of potential to cut down on energy usage.
Many businesses have already made the switch to renewable energy sources like solar power, which not only reduces carbon footprints but can also lead to cost savings over time. For example, IHG Hotels & Resorts has opened its first “net zero” branded property, designed to operate entirely on renewable and solar energy(1).
Water conservation is another area where the hospitality industry can see significant benefits. Hotels and resorts, in particular, often consume vast amounts of water for guest services and landscaping. By installing water-saving fixtures, such as low-flow showerheads and faucets, businesses can significantly reduce their water consumption without compromising guest comfort. Plus, some businesses are using water recycling systems to treat and reuse water, particularly for non-potable purposes like irrigation(2).
Then there’s the growing trend towards sustainable food sourcing. As more consumers demand locally-sourced and ethically produced food, restaurants and hotels are in a great position to capitalise on this shift(3). Sourcing seasonal, local produce not only supports local farmers but also reduces food miles and the carbon footprint associated with imported goods.
In addition, businesses are beginning to experiment with plant-based menus and reducing food waste, both of which can contribute to sustainability efforts while appealing to an eco-conscious audience.
Another opportunity comes from sustainable tourism. Tourists are increasingly looking for destinations and experiences that align with their values. By offering eco-friendly amenities, promoting local culture, and reducing the environmental impact of their operations, hospitality businesses can attract a loyal base of environmentally-minded customers.
These opportunities are not just good for the planet-they’re good for business too. Embracing sustainability can enhance a brand’s reputation, improve operational efficiency, and help companies stay ahead of the competition in an increasingly eco-aware market.
